Batman (1989)

Synopsis: The Dark Knight of Gotham City begins his war on crime with his first major enemy being the clownishly homicidal Joker.

Movie review:

This is the original movie in the Batman franchise directed by Tim Burton and was simply called “Batman”. I am not the biggest Tim Burton fan however, I really liked this movie. Many parts in this movie worked especially the casting. Michael Keaton is the main character Batman who is a millionaire philanthropist by day and a frightening superhero by night. Keaton was not the critics’ first choice but gave a great performance both as Batman and his alter ego, Bruce Wayne. Keaton proved that an ordinary guy could become the new “caped crusader”. Jack Nicholson is perfect as the homicidal clown prince of Gotham named the Joker. Nicholson created a style that only he could bring to the screen that made the joker appeal to all who watched. The interaction between Bruce Wayne and Vikkie Vale, played by the talented Kim Basinger is made real through their interactions and on-screen chemistry. As a director, Tim Burton was really creative. He brought imagery, art, gothic style, and fantasy about a superhero to life for all comic book lovers to enjoy. This movie was also filled with action. The fight scenes with Batman and the Joker were exciting, believable and well-choreographed. As with all movies, a few silly scenes should have been edited out like the Alexander Knox comedic lines that fell short and flopped. For those fans who don’t like watching Batman kill, this movie is not for you. Unlike the comic book version, Batman literally murders some enemies—these scenes can be brutal. Because I am a superhero fan and this movie is pure action entertainment, I am going to give “Batman” a 3 out of 5 stars.
