The Edge of Seventeen

Synopsis:

Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine, who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian starts dating her best friend Krista. All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all.

Movie review:

“The Edge of Seventeen” is one of the best coming of age stories in a long time and is one of my favorite movies that came out last year. In the mood of classic films like “Sixteen Candles” and “The Breakfast Club” this is the type of movie John Hughes would have made if he were still alive. First time director Kelly Freemon Craig directs and writes this bittersweet comedy that feels fresh and heartwarming at the same time. Hailee Stienfeld plays the main character, Nadine an awkward 17 year old high schooler who tries to fit in and has trouble making friends because she is a little bit odd. Nadine has an unlikable personality, but Hailee Stienfeld brings real likability to this character. She makes the audience feel bad for her, at the same time root for her success. Steinfeld is outstanding in the movie and proves that she is the actress to watch among her generation. Woody Harrelson plays Nadine’s History teacher named Mr. Brunner. Harrelson is an expert at balancing hilariously funny with level headedness as he helps Nadine through her struggles with his own guidance and wisdom. Haley Lu Richardson plays Krista, Nadine’s best friend until she starts seeing Darian played by Blake Jenner, Nadine’s brother whom she doesn’t really like. They are both great supporting actors in this dramedy. The only problem I have with the movie is that once all the characters are introduced and the plot is explained, the story is predictable. In the end “The Edge of Seventeen” is a smart and bittersweet comedy that makes you feel better about yourself after you watch it, especially if you were that quirky, nerdy teen who really didn’t fit in during your high school years. Because of this superb cast, talented acting, and great script, I am going to give“The Edge of Seventeen” a 5 out of 5 stars.
