Movie Review:

“Power Rangers” is a reboot to the 90s TV show of the same name. Ever since I heard they were going to make a new Power Rangers movie I thought it was a terrible idea, but then I saw the 1st trailer for the movie. It caught my interest and I was hooked. As a childhood fan of the Power Rangers TV show (especially the red ranger character), I can happily say that “Power Rangers” is an enjoyable movie with great action sequences and character moments. The film follows five ordinary teens who discover they have powers and must come together to save their town and the world against an alien threat. When I heard the title called, Power Rangers, I was expecting something cartoonish and amusing, but this version was more serious and has a darker tone to it. The movie is a mix of superheroes and “The Breakfast Club”. The cast who played Josh, Kimberly, Billy, Zach, and Trini acted mature and professional in their roles, had great on screen chemistry with each other, and made the audience ‘like’ them as normal teenagers, not some ridiculously, silly cartoon characters. The three standouts in this movie are Decre Montgromy (red ranger), Naomi Scott (pink ranger), and R.J. Cyler (blue ranger) -- I can see them having a bright future in acting and I hope to see them in other movies soon. Becky G. (yellow Ranger) and Ludi Lin (black ranger) were good but their characters weren’t really flashed out as much as Josh, Kimberly and Billy. Of course, no movie is perfect and there were some problems with the film. The villain, Rita Repulsa, played by Elizabeth Banks. She is a good actress, but she was too cartoony and it felt like her character was written for a different movie. Also, there was some story and pacing issues. There were some shaky camera action sequences that could have been done better and more choreographed like final scene. In the end, I was really surprised and impressed with this movie. It has a well-written plot, and it is an entertaining blockbuster for all ages and fans who grew up with the Power Rangers. In my opinion, you will like and enjoy this film and it will definitely bring new fans, especially, my age to the franchise. I am giving “Power Rangers” a 3 out of 5 stars.
