Movie Review:

"Kong Skull Island" is directed by Jordan Vorgt-Roberts and is the second movie of the king of monsters universe and is the set up to "Godzilla vs. King Kong" movie coming out in the next few years. This movie takes place in 1973 when the Vietnam War ended and two scientists working for a company organization called Monarch have to lead an expedition in an unknown island called Skull Island. With the help of James Conrad (Tom Hiddlston), a skilled tracker is hired by John Goodman's character to lead this dangerous expedition. The best feature of this movie is the special effects; King Kong looks realistic with his huge build and scary look. Brie Larson plays Mason Weaver a photo-journalist and a peace activist who has her own motive to join this expedition. The aspects of all of the human characters are that they are misfits who have different angles. Larson is one of the main actors in the movie but her character is mostly one dimensional and she doesn't really have anything to do besides just run away from creatures. But Tom Hiddlston is very entertaining in the action scenes. Most of the supporting cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Jing Jahn and Tobey Kebbell are just dull and you aren't interested in following the development of any of them. One of the best characters in the movie is John C. Riley who plays Hank Marlow a World War II pilot who gets trapped in Skull Island for 40 years; he steals the show as this character and is the only one that has any likeable personality and humorous traits. Unfortunately, this storyline tries to offer some comedic moments but most of the humor falls flat although some does work well with John C. Riley's character. The directing is pretty good with lots of exciting imagery which produces a supernatural island with frightening creatures like the skull crawlers. Samuel L Jackson plays Preston Parkard an U.S army Lieutenant and in my opinion is one of the worst characters in the movie; he just yells annoyingly throughout every scene he is in. The third act is exciting and action packed with King Kong battling the enemy and was captivating to watch. "Kong Skull Island" is a fun and enjoyable blockbuster with entertaining action scenes and a great sense of adventure but the film suffers from one note and annoying characters that you don't really care about and too much set up of the Cinematic Universe of Godzilla. I am giving "Kong Skull Island" a 3 out of 5 stars.
