X-Men Apocalypse

Synopsis:

Worshiped as a god since the dawn of civilization, the immortal Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) becomes the first and most powerful mutant. Awakening after thousands of years, he recruits the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and other mutants to create a new world order. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Professor X (James McAvoy) and Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) lead a team of young X-Men to stop their seemingly invincible nemesis from destroying mankind.

Movie Review:

"X-Men Apocalypse" is the ninth installment in the X-Men universe and it is the sequel to "X-Men Days of Future Past" which is one of my favorite comic book movies. "X-Men Apocalypse" is a fun, entertaining, action packed blockbuster that has some flaws that prevent this movie from being better than the last one. After years of sleeping, Apocalypse awakens as the world's first mutant who wants to create a new world order. He later recruits Magneto, Storm, Angel and Psylocke to help him destroy the world as the fate of earth hangs in the balance. Professor X and Raven must lead a team of young X-Men to stop this seemingly invincible nemesis from his extinction level plan. What I love about this film has to be the well-directed action sequences which are full of exciting action scenes and are thrilling to watch. Once again the performances from the main cast are top notch. James McAvoy is great as Professor X, and in my opinion this was Michael Fassbender's best performance as Magneto. One of the most heartbreaking scenes in this movie is when Magneto watches his family get murdered right in front him; this whole scene was emotional to watch and you understand why Magneto joins with Apocalypse in his quest of destroying the world. Jennifer Lawrence is one of my favorite actors working today, but I can admit that she was phoning it in when doing this particular role. And it is clearly evident that she wants out of the X-Men universe. I did love how they introduced the young new mutants in this movie like Cyclops (Ty Sherian), Jean (Sophie Turner), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Night Crawler (Kodi Smit-Mcphee); they are all young and talented and were the standouts in this movie, and I can't wait to see what they can do in the next installment in this franchise. The characters that I didn't like in this movie are Phylocke and Angel who I felt were just one note characters. I didn't know much about them and they were just there for the story. One of my favorite scenes in this movie has to be the Quicksilver Scene as he saves everybody in the X-Men Mansion before it blows up which once again blew me away as I watched. Unfortunately, what this film suffers from is an overstuffed script that has too many storylines and plot holes that affects the second act of the movie. Also, the villain Apocalypse sometimes felt intimidating and feared but as the move progressed, he just felt like a clichéd villain who just wanted to destroy the world and I wasn't a huge fan of how he was defeated. Apocalypse was supposed to be one of the most powerful mutants in the world and he gets defeated by the X-Men combining their powers to destroy him which felt disappointing. "X-Men Apocalypse" isn't as great as its predecessor but this movie was still entertaining and I can't wait to see what they do with the next one. I am giving "X-Men Apocalypse" a 3 out of 5 stars.
