Edge Of Tomorrow

Synopsis:

When Earth falls under attack from invincible aliens, no military unit in the world is able to beat them. Maj. William Cage (Tom Cruise), an officer who has never seen combat, is assigned to a suicide mission. Killed within moments, Cage finds himself thrown into a time loop, in which he relives the same brutal fight -- and his death -- over and over again. However, Cage's fighting skills improve with each encore, bringing him and a comrade (Emily Blunt) ever closer to defeating the aliens.

Movie Review:

"Edge of Tomorrow" is directed by Doug Limon and is a science fiction action movie that was one of the most surprising movies of 2014 because of how good it is. It is fast moving, funny and action packed with outstanding performances from its two main leads of the film Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt'; they were both fantastic in this movie. Tom Cruise plays a role that he rarely plays, a coward named Maj. William Cage, an officer who has never seen combat and is afraid to but gets wrapped up in an assigned suicide mission. When he is killed within moments of the battle, he keeps waking up and re-living the same day over and over again (it reminds me of the movie "Groundhog Day" but with Aliens in it. This film knows how to combine a science fiction thriller with a comedy and does it in such a way that makes it even funnier to watch as the character William Cage knows when events are about to happen and anticipates other characters' responses. Rita Vrataski played by Emily Blunt steals the entire movie. She is so good as this strong female character who can take care of herself and can go toe to toe with Tom Cruise. Blunts proves she can be an action star. Most of the supporting cast like Brenden Gleeson does their job, but the late Bill Paxton who plays Master Sergeant Ferrel gives an exceptional performance. He is really funny and entertaining and I enjoyed watching him in this role. The action in this film is awesome and is what you expect from a modern era science fiction movie like this one — it is intense and exciting from beginning to end. The film is a little slow when it starts but it does pick up in terms of excitement after 10 minutes and there are a few annoying side characters who play the other soldiers but other than that this movie is full of entertainment and comedy, and action-packed with two strong leads. I highly recommend "Edge of Tomorrow" and I am giving it a 4 out of 5 stars.
