The Mummy

Synopsis:

Nick Morton is a soldier of fortune who plunders ancient sites for timeless artifacts and sells them to the highest bidder. When Nick and his partner come under attack in the Middle East, the ensuing battle accidentally unearths Ahmanet, a betrayed Egyptian princess who was entombed under the desert for thousands of years. With her powers constantly evolving, Morton must now stop the resurrected monster as she embarks on a furious rampage through the streets of London.

Movie Review:

"The Mummy" is directed by Alex Kurtsman and is a remake of the 1930's version of "The Mummy" and was supposed to start this new Cinematic Universe called the 'The Dark Universe' that would involve remaking all of the classic monster movies. I was really looking forward to this movie but was disappointed. There are a few positives — Tom Cruise is once again entertaining as the main lead. He brings his charm and swagger as Nick Morton, a soldier who plunders ancient sites for timeless artifacts and sells them on the black market. Definitely, he is the best part of this boring film. He actually made it watchable for most of the movie. His partner named Chris, played by Jake Johnson, is mostly the comedic relief that the audience needs. Sofia Boutella plays the Mummy and she is outstanding as this character. The make-up and visual effects for her are believable as a Princess who has been locked away for centuries and wants revenge. The opening action scene of the film is entertaining and fun to watch involving Nick (Cruise) and Chris (Johnson) in the middle of the desert where they awaken the evil mummy. Unfortunately, the scene can't save the rest of the movie; it goes downhill from there. This movie is supposed to be a horror movie but it seems more like an action comedy movie but the comedy falls flat at times and is just awkward in most scenes. Also, Russell Crowe who plays Dr. Henry Jekyll and his alter ego Mr. Hyde was wasted due to a badly written script. This movie spends most of its time setting up plots for 3 additional movies that will be made in the future that the writers neglected "The Mummy" itself. Annabelle Wallas is the female co-star of this movie. Personally, I did not like her character. I thought she was lazy and uninteresting to watch. She was just another damsel in distress who Nick has to save the entire movie. The epic climactic scene between Nick and the Mummy is ridiculous, boring and felt rushed. "The Mummy" was one of the most poorly written movies of the year. I am a huge Tom Cruise fan and was excited about this new 'Dark Universe' movies that universal was trying to set up but what I got was a messy film that tries too hard to be an action comedy rather than a horror film that it was meant to be. I am giving "The Mummy" a 2 out of 5 stars.
