Movie Review:

"Ready Player One" is an adaption of the book of the same name and is directed by one of my favorite directors of all time, Steven Spielberg who hasn't had a big movie in a while. I do love his small bio-themed movies, but I do miss the old Spielberg classics like "Jaws", "Jurassic Park" and "Indiana Jones". Did I get that classic Spielberg feeling when I watched this movie? The answer is yes…I loved it — that nostalgic Spielberg blockbuster of the 80's and 90's finally came back to me. "Ready Player One" is a about a young man named Wade Watts who doesn't have the nicest life because he lives with his Aunt and her abusive boyfriend since his parents were killed. He doesn't really like the real world so he escapes into a video game reality called the Oasis. Wade Watts is played by Tye Sheridan, a new, up and coming actor who proves he can entertain an audience. Unfortunately, his character is one dimensional but he makes you care about him. Olivia Cooke who plays Samantha the love interest of Wade Watts has great chemistry with her co-star and I fell for them as a couple. Wade's team members, known as the High Fives are funny and brought most of the humor to the film. The villain of the movie is Sorrento played by Ben Menderson who is famous for playing anti-heroes because he does evil so well, and he doesn't disappoint in this role either as a corrupt businessman who wants to take control of the OASIS for money and power. The CGI of the virtual reality of the OASIS is creative and captures your imagination like you are part of the OASIS itself. The action in this film is exciting and fun to watch that includes every geek and pop culture characters that are never boring. This movie is far from perfect and I recognized a few problems. There is a side villain, F'nale Zander played by Hannah John-Kamen, who I felt was too over the top, out of place and unnecessary to the plot. Also, the movie is too long and some of the characters had no back story causing the audience to lose interest in them. Still, "Ready Player One" is an entertaining movie with great action set pieces and tons of nostalgia that will make you feel like a kid again — Steven Spielberg is finally back. I am giving "Ready Player One" a 4 out of 5 stars.
