Thoroughbreds

Synopsis: Childhood friends Lily and Amanda reconnect in suburban Connecticut after years of growing apart. Lily has turned into a polished upper-class teenager who has a fancy boarding school on her transcript and a coveted internship on her resume. Amanda has developed a sharp wit and her own particular attitude but all in the process of becoming a social outcast. Though they initially seem completely at odds, the pair eventually bond and hatch a plan to solve both of their problems.

Movie Review:

"Thoroughbreds" is directed by first time director Cory Finely and is a psychological thriller and is one of my favorite films so far this year. With outstanding performances by its main female leads, a memorable last performance from the late Anton Yelton, and an ending that is so twisted that it sent shivers down my spine, this movie is so intense and terrifying to watch that I couldn't stop thinking about it long after it ended. This film perfectly mixes both comedy and psychological horror elements where you can laugh and be horrified all at the same time. Anya Taylor Joy and Olivia Cooke give the best performances of their careers so far and they were both fantastic in these roles. Anya Taylor Joy plays Lily a polished upper-class teenager who goes to a fancy boarding school. Her character is so unpredictable and has so many secrets that she makes you question her sanity, yet, she is very likeable. On the other side of the coin, you have Amanda played by Olivia Cooke who has a real attitude. She is a social outcast but her character brings a sense of humor to the film that makes the audience laugh along with her. Cooke steals the movie and I absolutely loved her in this role. As the plot goes, the girls decide to kill Lily's step-father so they hire Tim, a wacky criminal and drug dealer, played by the late Anton Yelton. He has some of the funniest scenes in the entire film and I applaud his final performance. The direction for this film is flawless— every scene feels smooth, suspenseful and detail oriented (keep your eyes on the screen so you don't miss a thing). "Thoroughbreds" to me feels like a mix of the films "American Psycho" and "Heathers", and will keep you guessing until the credits role. If you like an unpredictable thriller, go see "Thoroughbreds". I am giving "Thoroughbreds" a 5 out of 5 stars.
