Movie Review:

"Captain Marvel" is the 21st film in the Marvel Universe and it is an entertaining space adventure with tons of laughs, but regrettably, it is a predictable paint by numbers superhero movie that follows the marvel formula that I have seen loads of times in other movies. However, I still enjoyed watching this movie that contains some incredible action set pieces that are amazing to view on the big screen. "Captain Marvel" is about an extraterrestrial Kree warrior, Veers/Carol Danvers who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. With the help of Nick Fury, Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while connecting her special superpowers to end the war between the Skrulls and the Kree. Some critics have blasted Brie Larson as Captain Marvel stating that she never really found her niche as this character and would have preferred a Charlize Theron or Jen Garner, but I thought she was just fine as Carole Danvers/Captain Marvel. She played this character as a quirky powerful female type but she had no emotional arc in this movie. I loved her partnership with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)—it was the best part of the movie with their perfect comedic timing that reminded me of the old 90’s action movies. Unfortunately, Jackson carried Larson in every scene. The standout character in "Captain Marvel" has to be Talos/Keller (Ben Mendelsohn); he was a great villain with emotional depth and you understand why he wants the best for his people to live in peace from the Kree Empire. The character that stole the show was Goose the cat; he was hilarious and cute and will take your heart by the end. The action in this film was top notch and well-choreographed especially the beginning fight scene in which Captain Marvel was captured by the Skrulls and she struggles to escape. The problem I had with this movie was the writing in which the dialogue and scenes were weak at times and the pace was slow. Another disappointment was that some of the familiar Universe characters like Coulson and Ronan were hardly in the film and to me they felt wasted. "Captain Marvel" is a fun, sci-fi adventure with some good surprises. Even through it is not a top tier Marvel film, I still enjoyed this movie and I can’t wait to see more of Captain Marvel in future films. I am giving "Captain Marvel" a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
