Booksmart

Synopsis:

Academic overachievers Amy and Molly thought keeping their noses to the grindstone gave them a leg up on their high school peers. But on the eve of graduation, the best friends suddenly realize that they may have missed out on the special moments of their teenage years. Determined to make up for lost time, the girls decide to cram four years of not-to-be missed fun into one night -- a chaotic adventure that no amount of book smarts could prepare them for.

Movie Review:

Booksmart" is directed by Olivia Wilde and marks her directorial debut. This film is a great coming of age film that is funny, heartwarming and relatable. I have the feeling it's going to be one of the best films of the year. The heart of the story is the friendship between best friends Amy and Molly who are both academic overachievers. The problem arises when they realize that they missed out of four years of partying so they decide to make up for it one crazy night. The two leads Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein are wonderful in this movie as they realistically portray characters that we all new from our past high school days. In my opinion, one of the standouts in the movie was Billie Lourd, the late Carrie Fisher’s daughter. She plays Gigi, a weird drug user, who shows up unexpectedly. Her acting talent surprised me but she was fantastic in every scene she appeared in. The supporting cast of Skyler Gisondo adds some humor and a lot of heart to his scenes. And there were a lot of funny cameos by actor’s Jason Sudeikis (clueless principal), Lisa Kudrow (Amy’s mother), and Will Forte (Amy’s father). This movie worked because of a smart script. “Booksmart” is a new undertaking on the coming of age movies with its fresh characters, funny moments fueled with great acting by its cast and spot-on directing from actress Olivia Wilde. This makes “Booksmart” one of my favorite movies of the year—I loved this film. I am giving “Booksmart” a 5 out of 5 stars.
