Birds of Prey

Synopsis:It's open season on Harley Quinn when her explosive breakup with the Joker puts a big fat target on her back. Unprotected and on the run, Quinn faces the wrath of narcissistic crime boss Black Mask, his right-hand man, Victor Zsasz, and every other thug in the city. But things soon even out for Harley when she becomes unexpected allies with three deadly women -- Huntress, Black Canary and Renee Montoya.

Movie Review:

“Birds of Prey” was directed by Cathy Yan and is the 8th film in this DC Cinematic Universe and this one is all about Harley Quinn. Cathy Yan delivers an entertaining, very violent, and crude film that was fun to watch. Margot Robbie returns to the role of Harley Quinn and she perfectly nails everything about this character from her accent to her toughness. The new supporting characters fit right into the DC Universe. Jurnee Smollett-Bell who portrays Black Canary was fantastic, especially in the fights scenes. And Rosie Perez who plays Detective Renee Montoya was amazing as well; she added some great comedy moments to the movie. The character who shines in this film was the Huntress assassin played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She was a combination of funny and ruthless, but I wish she had a much bigger role in the film. The action in this movie is exciting, colorful, and very well directed and it reminds me of a comic book version of a “John Wick” movie. The villain this time around is Roman Sionis aka Black Mask, an insane mob boss who wants Harley dead and is played by the great Ewan McGregor who is fantastic. Victor Zsasz, a henchman of Black Mask, is the second villain who is played by Chris Messina but he wasn't a standout. Harley Quinn takes a young girl under her wing named Cassandra, a pick-pocket and a thief played by new actress Ella Jay Basco. I loved their mother and daughter relationship and how Quinn forms the birds of prey to protect her. My biggest problem of the movie is the Harley Quinn narration throughout which sometimes leads to a lot of unnecessary backstory of other characters and it felt boring at times. “Birds of Prey” is an entertaining and well directed film that felt like a female version of “Deadpool”. I am giving “Birds of Prey” a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
