Synopsis: A young writer travels to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Surrounded by a cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she soon finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan.
Movie Review:
“"Opus, directed by Mark Anthony Green, is an original dark comedy that takes a satirical approach to starting a cult. The movie is well-made with fantastic performances by the cast, and there are some funny moments sprinkled throughout. However, I felt like something was missing.
Ayo Edebiri, who plays Ariel Ecton, a young writer, delivers a compelling and reliable performance as a hotshot rookie writer working for a magazine company. He is easily the best part of the movie. John Malkovich plays Alfred Moretti, a legendary pop star, and his hilarious yet unhinged performance as a crazy sociopath who starts a cult is truly memorable. Amber Midthunder shines as Belle, one of the cult members, giving an intense and terrifying performance.
While I am a big fan of Juliette Lewis, I felt like her performance was wasted and she had nothing much to do in the movie. Most of the supporting cast seemed to be there just to be killed off, which was disappointing.
My biggest issue with the movie is that it feels too similar to other films like "Get Out," "Midsommar," and "Blink Twice," which executed the concept better. Additionally, I was not a fan of the third act and the ending, which felt unfocused and like a waste.
Overall, I found "Opus" to be a huge disappointment, and I would give it a 3/5 stars."
