Belfast

Synopsis: A semi-autobiographical film which chronicles the life of a working-class family and their young son's childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s in the Northern Ireland capital.

Movie Review:

“Belfast” is directed by Kenneth Branagh, and it is a semi-autobiographical comedy and drama about one Irish family in the late 1960’s during the riots in Northern Ireland. This film is funny, emotional, and very personal. Jamie Dornan plays Pa a struggling father and husband who balances work and family while violent riots breakout on the streets of Belfast. Dornan gives one of his best performances as this character. He is witty, serious and a talented singer. Cailtriona Balfe plays Ma the mother and she delivers some of the most emotional scenes in the film. Balfe is incredible as this protective, sentimental, and passionate wife/mother. I think the actor that steals the entire film is Ciaran Hinds as Pop. The grandfather has humor and wisdom and a real understanding of life that he shares with his family throughout the movie. Judi Dench plays Granny the grandmother but is a low-key supporting character. Jude Hill (his first movie role) plays Buddy the son, and I was impressed with his performance. This young boy’s witness to intimidation, prejudice, tragedy, death, and destruction is seen through his eyes; it is riveting. And, he has great on-screen chemistry with Ma, Pa, Pop and Granny. This film was shot in black and white, and it fits the mood of the film. Also, the music captures the feel of the 1960’s-- it was upbeat, and it becomes like a character in the film. I loved this movie. It is one of my favorites of the year. I am giving “Belfast” a 4.5/5 stars.
