Movie Review:

Blue Beetle” is directed by Angel Manuel Soto, and it is the first Latino based superhero film that takes place in the DC universe. This movie is full of excitement and emotion -- a win for DC. The Latino family dynamic brings something new to the superhero genre. Xolo Mariduena plays Jaime Reyes a recent college graduate trying to find his place in this world. His character is likable, charismatic, and relatable. The Blue Beetle suite appeared amazing with great looking visual effects that added depth to the action scenes. Another standout was Bruna Marquezine who plays Jenny Kord the love interest. Her on screen chemistry with Xolo and her action scene involvement made her an important character in the movie. George Lopez steals the show as Rudy Reyes Jamie’s crazy conspiracy uncle. His comedy throughout the film made his character my favorite. I loved all his family his sister (Belissa Escobedo), his mother (Elpidia Carrillo), his father (Damian Alcazar), and his grandma (Adriana Barraza) – they all provided the heartwarming emotions this movie needed and captured the Latino culture perfectly. Despite all the great action scenes, it did feel repetitive and generic like I’ve seen this story before in other comic movies. The weakest part of the movie were the villains, especially Susan Sarandon who plays Victoria Kord an evil CEO of a weapons company that wants the alien technology the Scarab, but her plan felt silly. But this was still an entertaining comic book movie with a fresh take on a superhero. I am giving “Blue Beetle” a 3.5/5 stars.
