Synopsis: Two conspiracy-obsessed men kidnap the CEO of a major company when they become convinced that she's an alien who wants to destroy Earth.
Movie Review:
"Begonia" is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, and it's an original dark comedy in the science fiction genre. It's funny, unsettling, and downright strange, with some bizarre moments that will stick with me for a long time. The film features two outstanding performances from the leads, making it one of my top picks of the year so far. What really sets this movie apart is its stunning visuals, thanks to incredible direction and cinematography that kept my eyes glued to the screen. Emma Stone plays Michelle Fuller, a CEO of a major company, delivering another fantastic performance. She's smart, intriguing, devious, and at times unlikable, yet the film somehow makes you root for her as she finds herself held captive against her will. Jesse Plemons portrays Teddy, the young man who kidnaps her; he works for her company, but in the warehouse, he truly steals the show. He's one of the most interesting characters, grappling with a lot of personal issues, and he delivers the funniest lines in the entire movie. What I loved about these two characters is the brilliant writing that makes them feel three-dimensional. The sharp, clever dialogue really makes them stand out. Aiden Delbis plays Don, Teddy's cousin, who is on the spectrum and gives a great performance as someone conflicted about his actions, constantly questioning his cousin. He was solid throughout. Alicia Silverstone also delivers a good performance, even in her smaller role, which ties together nicely at the end. The only downside for me was the ending; it might split opinions since it doesn't have a happy conclusion and feels a bit too strange and bizarre, leaving me a little confused. Other than that, "Begonia" offers a weird, funny, and honest look at how trauma can impact decision-making in life, with fantastic writing and acting that makes it a must-watch. I'm giving it a 4.5/5 stars.
