Synopsis: A billionaire’s death sets off a chain of events for Iris and her friends during a weekend trip to his lakeside estate.
Movie Review:
"Companion," directed by Drew Hancock in his directorial debut, is a new original science fiction dark comedy that stands out as the first great movie of 2025. The smart script is sharp, funny, and delves into complex ideas about toxic relationships and abuse, making it a gripping watch.
The characters themselves are interesting, complex, and flawed, which adds to their intrigue. Sophie Thatcher shines as Iris, stealing the show with her dynamic and fascinating performance as a young woman coming to terms with being in a toxic relationship. Her character is both funny and charming, making her easy to love.
Jack Quaid delivers a great performance as Josh, Iris's boyfriend, portraying a fake nice guy who can quickly switch to being toxic. Lucas Gage impresses as Patrick, offering an innocent, hilarious, and sad performance that makes him a standout character.
Megan Suri and Harvey Guillen also deliver unique and humorous performances, although their characters could have been given more depth. Despite this, the balance of humor, science fiction, horror, and complex themes of toxic behavior in the film is what makes it special.
While the third act may feel a bit familiar, "Companion" remains a funny, dark, and unhinged film with great twists and turns that keep the audience engaged. Overall, I would give it a solid 4/5 stars.
