Death on the Nile

Synopsis: Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot's Egyptian vacation aboard a glamorous river steamer turns into a terrifying search for a murderer when a picture-perfect couple's idyllic honeymoon is tragically cut short.

Movie Review:

“Death on the Nile” is directed by Kenneth Branagh, and it is the sequel to the 2017 film “Murder on the Orient Express” and is the remake of the 1978 movie of the same name. I liked this sequel much better than the last one as it tells a better story of love, sex, and revenge. Kenneth Branagh once again directs and stars as the most famous and best detective Hercule Poirot who is charming, smart, cunning, and sophisticated. Kenneth Branagh is perfect in this role, and I felt he was the best part of the movie. You do learn so much more about Hercule Poirot’s past this time around (his time in world war I as well as his tragic love life with this wife which still haunts him). Tome Batetman plays Poirot’s sidekick Bouc who is witty and clever, and he steals every scene that he is in. This film is loaded with a great cast of talent like Armie Hammer, Gal Gadot, Ali Fazal, Emma Mackey, and Annette Benning and most of their characters are rich and unlikable but they are entertaining to watch their stories unfold. I do love a great mystery and ‘who done it plot’ and this film makes you guess until the end. There were several problems I had with the film. It takes a long time setting up the mystery part of the story. Too much time is spent on explaining how Gal Gadot’s character Linnet Ridgeway is in danger from the people she calls friends who were boring and one-dimensional. And there were some scenes on the boat that looked fake, and some CGI wasn’t good. But with Kenneth Branagh stylish direction, a great mystery, and a great cast this is an entertaining ‘who done it’ movie. I am giving “The Death on the Nile” a 3.5/5 stars.
