Evil Dead Burns

Synopsis: After the loss of her husband, a grieving woman seeks solace with her in-laws at their secluded family home. However, it soon becomes a reunion from hell as the Book of the Dead unleashes demonic forces that transform them into Deadites one by one. 

Movie Review: 

"Evil Dead Burn," directed by Sebastien Vanicek, marks the sixth entry in this 40-year-old horror series. Like its predecessors, it's filled with blood, gore, insanity, and a ton of fun as these unlikable characters are hunted down by the undead. This aspect is what makes the franchise so memorable. The standout feature of the film is Sebastien's direction, with his endless zooms and one-shot sequences that ramp up the terror and tension, keeping me on the edge of my seat throughout. I also appreciated the film's style, the pervasive sense of dread, and the social commentary on abuse, which added an emotional and significant layer. Souheila Yacoub stars as Alice, a young French woman mourning her abusive husband. She delivers a powerful, relatable performance that makes you empathize with her, easily making her the best character in the film due to her depth. Hunter Doohan plays Joseph, Alice's brother-in-law, and while he portrays the typical nice guy, he comes off as a coward, making it tough to root for him because of his foolish choices. Luciane Buchanan plays Thya, Joseph's girlfriend, and she also gives a solid performance, but her character only becomes interesting when she turns into a Deadite and starts attacking the family, which adds a fun yet disturbing twist. The parents, Edgar Price (Erroll Shand) and Susan (Tandi Wright), are so unlikable that I found it hard to care about them at all. Even with the hardcore kills and bloodshed, I felt it was overdone at times, making the violence more disgusting than cool. Another downside was that most characters were insufferable, which made it hard to care about their fates. Still, "Evil Dead Burns" is a bloody good time for die-hard fans of this horror franchise that has consistently delivered for nearly 40 years  I am giving it a 3.5.5 stars.
