Free Guy

Synopsis:

When a bank teller discovers he's actually a background player in an open-world video game, he decides to become the hero of his own story -- one that he can rewrite himself. In a world where there's no limits, he's determined to save the day his way before it's too late, and maybe find a little romance with the coder who conceived him.

Movie Review:

“Free Guy” is directed by Shawn Levy, and it is an original movie that is not based on any existing ideas. I was surprised by how much I liked this film; it’s one of the better movies I have seen all year. This film has refreshing humor, heart-warming moments, and tackles real life world issues without hesitancy. Ryan Reynolds plays Guy a background character in an open world video game who is a care-free man oblivious to everything around him. For the most part, Ryan Reynolds just plays himself -- a glorified man-child, but it works. His character actually has an arc, and you find out more about him and why he is so special. Jodie Comer plays two roles: one as a video game avatar named Molotov Girl who is the heart of the film (her chemistry with Ryan Reynolds was amazing), and Millie a real-world character and coder who tries to save the game world. The romantic story between Millie and Joe Keery her former business partner was great. His character has a big surprise in the film, and he turned out to be my favorite character. Some of the action scenes were exciting to watch. Although I enjoyed most of the humor, there were some jokes that fell flat, and they weren’t funny. I thought the weakest character of the movie was Taika Waitti as Antwan a video game CEO who is an evil and super over the top villain. Unfortunately, he was too weird for me. There were some smart easter eggs about pop culture and hilarious celebrity cameos that I enjoyed. “Free Guy” is an original concept that works with smart humor, great acting and it has heart. I am giving “Free Guy” 4/5 Stars.
