Gran Turismo

Synopsis: The true story of a team of unlikely underdogs -- a working-class gamer, a former race-car driver, and an idealistic motorsport executive -- who risk it all to take on the most elite sport in the world.

Movie Review:

“Gran Turismo” is directed by Neil Blomkamp, and it is adapted from the popular racing video game of the same name; however, it is based on the inspiring true story of Jann Mardenbough (a working-class gamer that becomes a professional race car driver). This is an entertaining, crowd pleasing, emotional sports movie. Archie Madekwe plays Jann who is fantastic as this kid with a dream of becoming a race car driver, and his charm and likeability make you root for this underdog. Orlando Bloom plays Danny Moore a motorsport executive who comes up with this crazy idea that the best Gran Turismo player will become a racer. Bloom’s risk-taking character is well written and acted. David Harbour steals the show as Jack Salter a washed-up former racer turned coach, and he is humorous and tough with a tragic past revealed. He has some inspiring speeches throughout the movie that are touching. Djimon Hounsou plays Jann’s father, and he had some emotional scenes between a father and son that will make you tear up. When the racing scenes happen, the movie is intense and fast paced. There were some supporting characters that disappear and return after an hour of the movie that was a distraction to the story. My biggest issues with this movie were -- it felt too long, and there was a forced love interest that never should have been. This is still an entertaining sports movie to watch. I am giving “Gran Turismo” a 3.5/5 stars.
