Movie Review:
"Heart Eyes" is directed by Josh Ruben, making his directorial debut with this original and fun horror comedy with a rom-com twist. It has bloody, gory kills and a satirical nature that make it a lot funnier than expected. I absolutely loved Olivia Holt in this movie. She plays Ally, a young woman who works in advertising and doesn't believe in love after a breakup. She is funny, beautiful, and smart, making her an easy person to root for because she is so charming.
Mason Gooding plays Jay, a hopeless romantic who does believe in love. He is charming and likable, stealing the movie with his witty and sarcastic humor, making him a lovable character. The fantastic chemistry between Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding as the two leads really sells the romantic relationship and I loved it.
Jordan Brewster plays Detective Shaw, a cop trying to stop the killer. She is great in the movie and it's fun to see her in a different role than her usual "Fast and Furious" movies. If you're a fan of early 2000s slashers, this movie has callbacks, gory kills, and doesn't take itself too seriously, making it a fun watch.
The movie does become predictable and generic, especially with the end twist revealing the killer's identity, which I figured out when the character first appeared. Overall, "Heart Eyes" is a fun Valentine's Day slasher that works as both a horror movie and a rom-com. It's one of the better horror comedies I've seen, and I would give it a 3.5/5 rating.
