Movie Review:

“In the Heights” is directed by John M. Chu, and it is based on the Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. This musical stands-out from other musicals because of its catchy musical numbers that are energetic and vibrant; as well as, songs that are memorable that will get in your head after the credits roll. Everyone starring in the movie can act and sing – talent is overflowing in every scene. Anthony Ramos plays Usnavi the main character, and he is a great singer and dancer. Usnavi is a down on his luck character, likeable and relatable as he falls in love with Vanessa played by Melissa Barrera. She and Anthony Ramos have effortless chemistry together and it makes their love story so believable. Barrera sings her heart out in this film. One of the standouts was Corey Hawkins who plays his best friend Benny -- I was surprised that he can sing and dance so well. He has an emotional storyline with Nina played by Leslie Grace which is heartwarming. Every musical number was different than the last one which was refreshing to see. Jimmy Smits plays Kevin the father of Nina and his storyline with his daughter was complicated but loving. What I loved the most about this film was the theme and the life lessons. It really is a joyous celebration of culture and the people in one neighborhood. The only issue I had was the film is way too long, especially if you are not a fan of musicals. But all that said, “In the Heights” is an entertaining film full of sing-along music that will make you dance with a talented cast. I am giving “In the Heights” a 4.5/5 stars.
