Last Night in Soho

Synopsis:

An aspiring fashion designer is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s, where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer. However, the glamour is not all it appears to be, and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something far darker.

Movie Review:

“Last Night in Soho” is the 6th film directed by Edgar Wright, and it is uniquely different than his usual movies. I found it to be entertaining with talented acting and an interesting mystery, but weak in nature. One of the best things in this movie is how Edgar Wright makes the 1960s feel fresh, exciting, filled with electrifying music that becomes like a character of the film. Thomasin Mckenzie plays Eloise who is a college student with big dreams of becoming a fashion designer. But she has a tragic past that makes her nervous, timid, and suspicious of everything around her. When Eloise mysteriously returns to the 1960’s she experiences visions of a young woman named Sandy (played by Anya Taylor Joy) another woman who has big dreams of becoming a singer. Both leads prove to be confident and strong characters every time they are on screen. Matt Smith plays Jack who is both charming and creepy at the same time. Diana Rigg and Terrence Stamp play two important roles in the film and both bring some humor to an otherwise serious film. There are several things in the movie I didn’t like. Some of the side characters like Eloise’s roommate are not well written and they are one dimensional. The mystery surrounding Sandy’s past was interesting and that kept me guessing but when everything becomes revealed I felt disappointed -- it felt predictable, and it wasn’t scary at all. And I did not like the ending of the film. I am giving “Last Night in Soho” a 3.5/5 Stars.
