M3GAN

Synopsis:

M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll that's programmed to be a child's greatest companion and a parent's greatest ally. Designed by Gemma, a brilliant roboticist, M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as it plays the role of friend and teacher, playmate and protector. When Gemma becomes the unexpected caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, she decides to give the girl an M3GAN prototype, a decision that leads to unimaginable consequences.

Movie Review:

“M3GAN” is directed by Gerard Johnston and is a new original horror comedy. A funny satire full of horror callbacks to the film series “Chucky,” surprisingly this film has an emotional side to it as well. What makes this movie emotional is the mother/daughter relationship between the two leads. Allison Williams is great as Gemma a hard-working tech that works for a toy company, and she is trying to be a mother to her 8-year-old niece. Violet McGraw plays Cady Ryan Gemma’s niece, and she is the standout of the movie. She has some raw, emotional moments that are heartbreaking to watch which makes this more than a generic horror movie. The two actors who play the doll of M3GAN (Jenna Davis who does the voice and Amie Donald) were incredible; they were creepy and funny at the same time. There were some issues with some side characters and some storylines that fell flat like the big CEO of the toy company played by Ronny Chieng. His character was too cartoonish. However, the third act was entertaining and crowd pleasing. I am giving “M3GAN” a 4/5 stars.
