Synopsis: Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous rampage, its creator, Gemma, has become an advocate for government oversight of AI. Unbeknownst to her, a defense contractor has created a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate infiltration spy. However, as Emlia's self-awareness increases, it becomes less interested in taking orders. Hoping to stop Emilia, Gemma decides to resurrect M3GAN, making it faster, stronger, and more lethal.
Movie Review:
“M3GAN 2.0,” directed by Gerard Johnstone, is the sequel to the 2022 horror-comedy hit, “M3GAN,” which I genuinely enjoyed. However, this follow-up takes a surprising turn, shifting genres to become a spy action comedy. Unfortunately, it leans a bit too heavily into the goofy and ridiculous territory, which ultimately left me feeling disappointed.
There were definitely some funny lines and entertaining action scenes, especially since I’m a fan of spy movies. Violet McGraw returns as Cady, now 12 years old, and she delivers another fantastic performance. Her character has some of the funniest moments in the film, making her a standout. Jenna Davis also reprises her role as the voice of the A.I. doll, M3GAN, and she’s just as hilarious as ever.
However, aside from these two characters, the rest of the cast felt overly silly, which made them come across as foolish. Allison Williams plays Gemma, Cady’s aunt and a brilliant inventor, but her character makes some questionable decisions that had me scratching my head. Then there’s the FBI agent played by Tim Sharp, who felt more like a cartoon character than a serious role, making his scenes cringeworthy.
The new android, AMELIA, played by Ivanna Sakhno, was decent but felt reminiscent of the story from “Terminator 2,” which made it feel a bit generic. The villain twist was also predictable and silly, pulling me out of the experience.
Overall, “M3GAN 2.0” is a strange and unsatisfying sequel that tries to juggle too many ideas at once. I’m giving it a 2.5 out of 5 stars.
