Movie Review:

“Mean Girls” is directed by Samantha Janye and Artuto Perez Jr., and it is a remake of the ionic 2004 movie that became a cult classic. What makes this 2024 version different is that it is a musical. From the entertaining musical numbers to the catchy songs that will get stuck in your head, this movie is entertaining throughout.  The best thing in this movie is a cast of great young actors that are talented singers. Angourie Rice plays Cady Heron, and she shows the same innocence as Lindsey Lohan did back in 2004. Renne Rapp plays Regina George who had the most challenging role to play trying to fill the shoes of Rachel McAdams’ iconic role from 2004.  But she met the challenge as the mean bully. Auli’I Caravalho steals the show as Janis the person who becomes Cady’s best friend – she is relatable and likeable. Karen (Avantika) and Gretchen (Bebe Wood) the other plastics were funny and had some great singing moments, but they lacked a storyline. It was great to see Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles from 2004. My biggest issue was some of the musical moments felt like a music video instead of an on-screen musical. “Mean Girls” was a fun retelling of the 2004 movie with a musical twist that proves everything can be updated. I am giving it a 3.5/5 stars.
