Movie Review:
“Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning” is back, directed once again by Christopher McQuarrie. This marks the eighth installment in the beloved action franchise, and it’s one of my most anticipated films of the year! It delivers an exciting, epic, and emotional finale that truly stands out as one of the best experiences I’ve had in a movie theater this year.
Tom Cruise reprises his role as super spy Ethan Hunt, who is tasked with saving the world from nuclear war. The stakes have never been higher, and the gripping scenes had me glued to the screen. Cruise delivers his best performance yet as Ethan, a character he’s portrayed for 30 years. This time, we see a huge emotional arc that deepens our connection to him. Plus, the outrageous stunts he pulls off are some of the most jaw-dropping I’ve seen all year—there were moments that literally made me gasp!
Haley Atwell returns as Grace, Ethan’s new love interest, and she is fantastic. The chemistry between her and Cruise is electric, making their relationship feel genuine and real. She’s definitely one of the best female characters in the franchise. Simon Pegg is back as Benji Dunn, and he has more to do this time around than in any previous installment. His charm, wit, and comedic timing add a delightful touch to the film.
We also get two new team members, played by Pom Klementieff and Greg Tarzan Davis, who are great additions to the crew. I’m excited to see where their characters go in the future. Ving Rhames returns as Luther Stickell, Ethan’s long-time friend and hacker. He delivers an emotional and heartfelt performance, but I wish he had more screen time—he definitely deserves it!
The team dynamic is my favorite aspect of any of the films, and this one is no exception. The action is incredible and jaw-dropping, especially in the last hour and the thrilling third act. However, Esai Morales delivers a menacing performance as the villain Gabriel, but unfortunately, he comes across as one-dimensional and occasionally silly, making him one of the weaker antagonists in the franchise. The first hour feels like a lot of setup, filled with characters discussing the plot, unnecessary flashbacks, and references to previous films that contribute to a bloated feel. Despite its flaws, “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning” manages to be a satisfying finale. I’d rate it 4 out of 5 stars!
