Movie Review:

“Mortal Kombat” is directed by Simon McQuoid and it is his directorial debut. Based off the popular video game of the same name, this is one of the better adaptations I have seen, with exciting action and likable characters that is pleasing to gamer fans. The film does have an incredible opening scene that introduces Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Joe Taslim as the villain Sub-Zero and the bloody action scene sets the tone of the movie. (These two characters have some intense action scenes throughout). Joe Taslim plays Sub-Zero and he is a great villain who is dangerous, fierce, and a killing machine. Lewis Tan plays Cole Young whose character was just a boring guy, but he is great in the brutal, fast paced fight scenes. Jessica McNamee plays Sonya Blade and I was not impressed with her character; her action scenes were too edited and most of her fight scenes are not viewable to the audience. Josh Lawson plays Kano who brought most of the humor and is the crazy character in the group. His dialogue is filled with silly one-liners, which is needed in this violent action film. One of biggest issues with this film is that there are too many characters in the movie. It does have a mythology tournament theme that is interesting, unfortunately it is just a set up for the next film and the tournament never happens which I thought it was a wasted opportunity. With all of its flaws, I still enjoyed watching this movie although it was very bloody and violent at times. I am giving “Mortal Kombat” a 3 out of 5 stars.
