Synopsis: An 18th-birthday mushroom trip brings Elliott face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self. When the older Elliott starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn't do, she realizes she has to rethink everything about family, love, and what's becoming a transformative summer.
Movie Review:
"My Old Ass" is a coming-of-age comedy directed by Megan Park that has quickly become one of my favorite films of the year. The great acting, emotional moments, and hilarious scenes all come together to make it one of the best coming-of-age movies I've seen in a while.
Maisy Stella delivers a standout performance as Elliot, an 18-year-old free spirit trying to navigate life after high school. Her character is relatable, funny, and has a depth that makes her truly memorable. Aubrey Plaza also shines as the older version of Elliot, bringing her dry humor to the role of a moody middle-aged woman.
I only wish Plaza had more screen time, as her character adds an interesting dynamic to the story. When Elliot meets Chad, played by Percy Hynes White, she begins to question everything about her life and falls in love. The chemistry between Stella and White is fantastic, making their romance feel genuine and heartfelt.
The movie does a great job balancing humor, emotion, and the message of growing up and finding love. However, I did find it a bit confusing how older Elliot could communicate with her younger self, and the film does start off a bit slow.
Overall, "My Old" is a charming and heartfelt coming-of-age movie with a standout performance by Maisy Stella. It's one of the funniest films of the year, and I would give it 4.5/5 stars.
