Synopsis: In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control.
Movie Review:
"Nosferatu," directed by Robert Eggers, is a remake of the 1922 silent film. It's a fantastic, gothic, tragic love story with incredible acting and production design that transports you back to the 1800s. This movie quickly became one of my favorites of the year.
Bill Skarsgård plays Count Orlok, a dark vampire obsessed with a woman who is haunting and terrifying. His performance is so scary that it gives you a sense of dread every time he appears on screen. Nicholas Hoult delivers one of his best performances as Thomas Hunter, a loving husband who is flawed, innocent, and emotional, making you care about him. Lily-Rose Depp steals the show as Ellen Hunter, giving a fearless, impressive, and devastating performance that I hope earns her an Academy Award nomination.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin also give outstanding performances, adding depth and tragedy to their roles. Willem Dafoe shines as Professor Albin Eberthart von Franz, delivering a crazy and silly performance as a character obsessed with the supernatural and the legend of Nosferatu.
The gothic atmosphere and creepy imagery in the film make it the best-looking horror movie of the year. The scares are effective and terrifying when they happen. While the ending may not work for everyone, it is poetic and makes sense for the story being told.
Overall, "Nosferatu" is a chilling gothic love story that ranks among my favorite movies of the year. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
