Power Ballad

Synopsis: When Rick, a past-his-prime wedding singer, meets fading boy-band star Danny during a gig, the two bond over music and a late-night jam session. But when Danny turns one of Rick's songs into the hit that reignites his career, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves -- even if it means risking everything he cares about. 

Movie Review: 

"Power Ballad" is directed by John Carney and is an original music comedy that’s full of heart and emotion, featuring great tunes that will have you singing along. Paul Rudd delivers a fantastic performance, making this movie enjoyable. John Carney excels at weaving a story through music, showcasing the challenges of writing a hit song, and he does it brilliantly. Paul Rudd plays Rick Power, a former rock star turned wedding singer. He’s a super talented guy who never quite made it, but he shines in this role as a washed-up singer, performing his own songs impressively. He truly is the heartbeat of the film, so likable that you can’t help but root for him. Nick Jonas portrays Danny Wilson, a fading boy band star, and while he plays himself well, his character comes off as selfish, immature, and oblivious, making it tough to connect with him. Peter McDonald plays Sandy, Rick’s friend and guitarist in the wedding band, and he steals the show as the middle-aged bad boy who loves to drink, delivering some of the funniest moments in the film. Marcella Plunkett and Beth Fallon play Rachel and Aja, Rick’s wife and daughter, respectively. They give solid performances, but their roles are limited. I wish we had more time to explore Danny Wilson’s character to understand his selfishness better, but he ends up feeling one-dimensional. I’m usually a big fan of Jack Reynor, who plays Mac, Danny’s labor executive, but I found his character so unlikable that I lost interest in him. Despite some storytelling flaws, this film is still a heartwarming comedy about second chances and the idea that it’s never too late to succeed, highlighted by a great lead performance from Paul Rudd. I’m giving "Power Ballad" a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
