Movie Review:
The movie "Scream" 7 is directed by Kevin Williamson, the guy who created and wrote this iconic 90s slasher series. It's his first time directing in this franchise, and he brings us a decent, if somewhat generic, horror flick with some entertaining bloody kills and a few good scares. It was great to see Neve Campbell back in her iconic role, but overall, it was a bit of a letdown. Neve reprises her role as Sidney Prescott, now going by Sidney Evans, and she delivers the best performance as a character grappling with her past while trying to move forward in life. Her complicated relationship with her daughter was one of the highlights of the film. I also loved seeing Sidney as a mother and wife, a side of her I never thought I’d witness. Isabel May plays Sidney’s teenage daughter, and her emotional, heartfelt, and brave performance really stole the show for me; she was just amazing and made me believe she could take the lead in future films. Joel MacHale plays Mark Evans, Sidney’s husband, and he did a fantastic job in a significant role that really impressed me. Courtney Cox is back as Gale Weathers, the famous talk show host turned reporter, and she gives a funny, charming performance. She had a lot to do in the last three films, so it was nice to see her again, but I missed her when her character seemed to vanish in the third act. I was a big fan of Mindy (Jasmin Savory Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding); they were favorites in the previous two films, and I was glad to see them return. They had some fun, humorous moments together, but it felt like they were underutilized. The movie kicks off with a killer opening sequence that’s chilling, intense, and scary, making it one of the best openings in the franchise. Even with a solid supporting cast like Anna Camp, Mckenna Grace, Asa German, Celeste’O Connor, and Sam Rechner, who all play Tatum’s friend group, the film still felt a bit off. Everything's okay, but the movie lacked character development and felt like a setup for Ghostface to take out the characters. My main problem with this film was the awful third act, which was packed with cheap nostalgia and one of the most disappointing Ghostface reveals ever. "Scream 7" is a decent, predictable slasher that features some solid performances, enjoyable bloody kills, and a few fun scenes, but it might just be one of the weakest installments in this 30-year-old franchise that seems to be running out of fresh ideas. I'm giving it a 3 out of 5 stars.
