Scream VI

Synopsis:

Four survivors of the Ghostface murders leave Woodsboro behind for a fresh start in New York City. However, they soon find themselves in a fight for their lives when a new killer embarks on a bloody rampage.

Movie Review:

“Scream VI” is once again directed by Tyler Giller and Matt Bettinell-Olpin who came back to direct following “Scream” (2022) which was a surprised hit. This time around the film is scarier, bloodier, and more intense with a funny social commentary that the franchise is known for. This might be my favorite “Scream” film since the 1996 original. From the incredible opening scene, the terrifying Ghost Face killer captures a fresh take to this classic franchise. The New York setting makes this movie feel different than the past “Scream” films because it is bigger in scope leading Ghost Face to emerge anywhere, anytime. The two standouts were Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera who return play Tara and Sam Carpenter strong, smart characters who are more likable in this movie. Mason Gooding also returns to play Chad Meeks. One of the survivors from the last film, he develops a romance with Tara. Jasmin Savoy Brown plays Mindy Meeks who is geeky and funny and tries to figure out who the Ghost Face killer really is. The two legacy characters Kirby (Hayden Panettiere) and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) were used in a way that made sense for the story. Every set piece was chilling to watch especially when Ghost Face attempts to kill Gale Weathers in her apartment; it was very intense. Some of the newer characters were uninteresting but effective to move the plot along. This movie did keep me guessing the identity of the Ghost Face killer until the end, and it did surprise me. Some parts of the film are ridiculous and unbelievable at times, but it gets back on course. After the sixth installment in a horror franchise, these films keep getting better and better, and I am excited for “Scream VII”. I am giving “Scream VI” a 4/5 stars.
