Tenet

Synopsis: A secret agent is given a single word as his weapon and sent to prevent the onset of World War III. He must travel through time and bend the laws of nature in order to be successful in his mission.

Movie Review:

“Tenet” was directed by Christopher Nolan and is an original science fiction film that is complex, exciting, and bold. It is one of my favorite films that came out this year. But this movie is not for everyone since the puzzle like plot is confusing yet fascinating. The movie has an old spy espionage feeling with a time travel twist. John David Washington plays the protagonist who has to stop World War III. Even though you don’t know anything about this character, he is just a cool spy and you can’t wait to see his next move. Robert Pattinson plays his partner Neil who brings humor and personality to his character. In my opinion, Pattinson steals the movie with his performance. Elizabeth Debicki plays Kat a troubled wife that needs to escape her evil husband and get her son back. Elizabeth Debicki is the heart of the film and how her story unfolds was satisfying. Kenneth Branagh (Kat’s husband) plays the villain Andrei Sator who is a Russian terrorist and wants to destroy the world. Although his Russian accent sounded fake, his performance was phenomenal. Most of the supporting cast like Aron Taylor Johnson, Himesh Patel, Dimple Kapadia and Michael Cain all had important roles that could help the protagonist in his mission and moved the plot along. And the action scenes are intense especially the car chase scenes. There are a few issues I had with the movie. There was a lot of exposition and explaining of information that slows the movie down. Also, Christopher Nolan movies have a trend that they are more plot driven than character driven so there isn’t much of a back story to learn and get to know the characters. Finally, time travel was introduced near the third act and that was a bit confusing. Even though “Tenet” is not the best Christopher Nolan film, it is still an exciting sci-fi movie with awesome action and great performances by its cast. I am giving “Tenet” a 4 out of 5 stars.
