The Little Mermaid

Synopsis:

The youngest of King Triton's daughters, Ariel is a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. Longing to find out more about the world beyond the sea, Ariel visits the surface and falls for the dashing Prince Eric. Following her heart, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to experience life on land.

Movie Review:

“The Little Mermaid” is directed by Rob Marshall and is the remake of the 1989 Disney classic. I am happy to say, this is one of the better remakes that tells the same story but expands on the characters; everything that you loved about the original is in this movie. Halle Bailey plays Ariel who captures the character of a classic princess perfectly. Her powerful voice is mesmerizing with each song she sings. She definitely carries the movie. Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric and his character has a great backstory that makes him more compassionate and kinder. The characters of Eric and Ariel have great on-screen chemistry. Daveed Diggs plays Sebastian the crab and he steals the movie with his funny comedic timing. Awkwakina plays Scuttle the seagull who helps Ariel and she has many scenes with Sebastian using her funny sarcastic humor. Javier Bardem plays King Triton Ariel’s controlling father. Although he is domineering, he has a heartfelt scene near the end with his daughter that will melt your heart. Melissa McCarthy plays Ursula the evil sea witch and she is just as scary in this film as the ’89 version. Most of the CGI does look good but there are some scenes that looked like they were on a green screen that took me out of the movie. The 1989 version is only a one hour and 21 minutes, but this movie is an hour longer and you feel it. But this is still an entertaining remake for all ages to enjoy. I am giving “The Little Mermaid” a 3.5/5 stars
