Synopsis: In a dystopian, alternate- American riled by a totalitarian, regime, 50 teenage boys take a part in a deadly annual walking contest, forced to maintain a minimum pace or be executed, until only one survivor remains.

"The Long Walk" is helmed by Francis Lawrence and is adapted from the Stephen King novel of the same title. This film presents a gritty, fantastic, brutal, and gory interpretation of the source material, potentially ranking among my favorite films of the year. The film's success can be attributed to its well-crafted characters, whom you come to cherish, despite the fact that most will not survive, as only one can emerge victorious. This aspect renders the narrative intense and captivating from beginning to end. Cooper Hoffman portrays Raymond Garraty, a young man selected to participate in this perilous competition that drives him to the edge of existence. He delivers one of the finest performances of his burgeoning career, evoking heartbreak, emotion, and engagement that compels the audience to care for him. David Johnson plays Peter McVries, who becomes a close friend of Raymond and truly shines in this role, offering a riveting, sincere, and compassionate portrayal of this tragic figure. The evolving bond and friendship between Peter and Raymond serve as the emotional core of the film, reminiscent of "Stand by Me" at various moments. Charlie Plummer takes on the role of Barkovitch, initially an unlikable character, yet ultimately delivers a commendable performance as this complex, mentally troubled individual. The supporting cast, including Garret Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Ben Wang, Jordan Gonzalez, and Joshua Odjick, all provide powerful, relatable, and fearful performances as they navigate this competition. I found myself invested in each of these characters, despite many having limited screen time. Judy Greer portrays Mrs. Garraty, Raymond's mother, delivering an emotional performance, albeit in a minor role. Mark Hamill, who plays the Major, the film's primary antagonist, offers a decent performance, though it occasionally veers into cartoonish territory due to his tendency to yell. Despite this minor flaw, the film remains a compelling, riveting, and emotional rollercoaster that left me feeling shaken, solidifying its place as one of my favorite movies of the year. I am rating "The Long Walk" a 4.5 out of 5.
