Movie Review:
"The Monkey," directed by Osgood Perkins and based on a short story by Stephen King, is a horror comedy that offers a fun and enjoyable time with some seriously gruesome and bloody deaths. The movie also surprisingly delves into an emotional story about family dynamics.
One of the highlights of the film is the first 20 minutes, which sets up the lead characters Hal and Bill, two twins played by Christian Convery at 12 years old. Convery does an amazing job portraying the twins with distinct personalities that set them apart from each other. His performance is impressive, especially for a younger actor.
The curse of the monkey and the rules that must be followed to stop it from causing chaos add an element of craziness, humor, and excitement to the movie. As the story progresses 25 years later, Theo James takes on the roles of the adult twins Hal and Bill, who have led very different lives. James delivers a fantastic performance, portraying Hal as a nerdy, caring father and Bill as an aggressive villain.
Colin O'Brien shines as Petey, Hal's estranged son, bringing a sense of innocence and naivety to his character. Tatiana Mislay also delivers a hilarious performance as Lois Shelburn, the twins' mother.
While the movie has its strengths, there are a few issues. Some characters introduced later in the film feel out of place and make the movie seem goofy. Additionally, Hal and Bill become less interesting as the story progresses, making them somewhat boring. The third act also feels a bit rushed and lacks a satisfying resolution.
Overall, "The Monkey" is a gory and fun horror comedy that is worth a watch. I would give it a rating of 3.5/5 stars.
