Movie Review:
“The Old Guard 2,” directed by Victoria Mahoney, is the long-awaited sequel to the 2020 Netflix hit that many found enjoyable. However, after five long years, this follow-up is a major letdown. It feels boring, dull, and lifeless, making it one of the worst films I’ve seen all year.
The only redeeming quality of the movie is Charlize Theron, who reprises her role as Andy. She delivers a compelling and strong performance, and her character’s backstory, particularly her relationship with a long-lost immortal, initially piques interest. Unfortunately, that’s where the excitement ends.
What’s truly disappointing is the talented cast, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Henry Golding, and Uma Thurman. I’m a big fan of all of them, but they’re given nothing to work with in this lackluster script. Their characters come off as boring and uninspired, making it hard to care about their fates. Most of the supporting characters are equally forgettable, which only adds to the film’s overall disappointment.
The action sequences, which should have been a highlight, fall flat with poorly executed stunts and uninspired choreography. At times, I found myself struggling to stay awake. The ending is particularly egregious, feeling rushed and merely a setup for a potential third installment, despite the fact that this film hardly warrants one.
In summary, “The Old Guard 2” is a disappointing, generic, and ultimately frustrating experience. I’d rate it a mere 1.5 out of 5 stars. Save your time and skip this one.
