Movie Review:

“Tom and Jerry” is directed by Tim Story and is a reboot of the classic cartoon with a mix of live action. This film tries to be a nostalgic trip for kids, but unfortunately this might be one of the worst films I have seen all year. The movie relies on slapstick humor that is not funny and at times is crass and cringe worthy making it an embarrassment to the genre. It is difficult to tell a story about two animals, a cat and a mouse that don’t like each other that is based off a cartoon that is only 20 minutes long and try to turn that into an hour and half movie telling an interesting plot. In my opinion, the mix between live action and animation doesn’t work in this film and it looks out of place. While Tom and Jerry are chasing each other in a ridiculous subplot, the movie spends a lot of time with human characters that the audience doesn’t care about. Chloe Grace Moretz plays Kayla the main lead and she might be the only decent thing about this movie. Although her character is predictable, I still thought she was charming and funny and had some stand out moments. The performances by supporting actors Colin Jost and Michael Pena were disappointing. They play two bumbling one dimensional characters who are just unlikeable and add nothing to the plot. “Tom and Jerry” is not entertaining for any age group. It is a boring story and a waste of time to watch. I am giving “Tom and Jerry” a 1 out of 5 stars.
