You People

Synopsis: A new couple and their families reckon with modern love amid culture clashes, societal expectations, and generational differences.

Movie Review:

“You People” is directed by Kenya Barris (directorial debut) and is a new Romanic comedy with some of the funniest people in show business, but sadly this is disappointing. Jonah Hill who also wrote this movie plays Ezra Cohen a 35-year-old that wants to find the right person and he does in Amira played by Lauren London. I enjoyed their on-screen chemistry and it felt like they had a real romantic connection. Both are funny in this film. The best thing in this movie was Eddie Murphy playing Akbar Mohammed Amira’s dad and his character is an uptight old school that clashes with culture and generational differences. His scenes with Jonah Hill were hilarious. I thought Julia Louis Dreyfus who plays Shelly Cohen Ezra’s mother was comical at times, but some of her scenes were uncomfortable to watch because of the no filter dialogue. The supporting cast was funny as well like David Duchovny, Nia Long and Molly Gordon. One of my biggest issues with the movie is that it feels like a badly written sit com that lacks humor just a social commentary that is hitting you over the head. By the end of this movie, it is like every other predictable Rom-Com. I am giving “You People” a 3/5 stars.
